DINING ROOM CHAIR COVERS

Carol, a longtime friend who lives in Phoenix, Az, where it hardly ever rains, related her most recent baby shower-hosting perceive to me, and when you hear the catalogue of her hosting hell, you'll probably feel less agitated at the tiny, troublesome things that may pop up at your time to come events.

The Clash of the Grandmas

The hapless hostess had grown up with her friend Kim, and they had been best friends forever. It was a no-brainer for Carol, who had been Kim's maid of honor, to offer to host the baby shower. Had Carol allowed the strangeness Kim had with her manipulative (but charming) mum and her meddling (but well-meaning) mother-in-law while the wedding planning to work on her decision, she might have let another of Kim's friends take on the shower. But Carol figured, it's not a wedding, and she's not a direct member of the house (though she was all too familiar with the family's dynamics,) so how bad could it maybe be? Hmmmm.

Kim was in her eighth month, and they already knew the baby was a boy. Kim's mother-in-law (Mil) called Carol first, insisting that she should use a golf theme for the baby shower, since Brandon (Kim's husband/Mil's son) was an avid golfer, like the rest of his family. Kim played, too, so Carol concept it might not be a bad idea-until Kim's mom (Km) called to strongly propose a tiny Boy Blue theme, since that was the color project and theme for her new grandson's nursery, for which Km and Kim's father were paying good money-and a lot of it. The pressure (some pretty severe) was on, and it came on a daily basis until Carol ultimately chose her own theme-Baby's Day Out, which left gift shopping open to a diaper bag and its essentials, plush zoo or farm animals, all kinds of layette sets and lots of other cool stuff.  Long story short-Km and Mil were very cold to Carol when they arrived at the shower.

When it Rains It Pours

Since the theme was "Baby's Day Out," and they lived in rain-starved Phoenix, Carol figured it made sense to hold the June shower in her lovely backyard, which was more spacious than her house. She had put up phenomenal decorations, rented chairs, tables and linens, ready and set out a phenomenal buffet and had placed adorable baby shower favors at each place setting. It was a shower, all right. Even Phoenix's best weather prognosticators didn't see it coming. Buckets of rain forced 30 guests and the guest of honor, all racing to get the food and the gifts out of harm's way, inside Carol's 1,200 sq. Ft. Home.  It was at least 15 minutes before things got back to "normal."

Who Invited Braxton-Hicks?

Apparently, the big flurry of action was a bit too much for the very pregnant Kim. About 10 minutes after they had her situated in a comfy living-room chair, the contractions began. She had had Braxton-Hicks contractions before, but never so severe. They waited five minutes for the pains to subside, but they didn't, so Carol made the call to get her to the hospital. Mil called Brandon, and Km pulled her car to the front door. At Kim's request, Carol continued the shower so everyone could finish eating and celebrate what was about-or not about-to happen. Kim insisted that Carol open the gifts, too, which Carol concept seemed a bit unfair to Kim. After reasoning about it, though, Carol realized that, if Kim was verily having the baby now, she'd be too tired to open the gifts, and she may need some of them-like diapers and a diaper disposal -right away.  So Carol opened the gifts, while Kim's sister-in-law (Sil) opened another bottle of wine...

Two Showers in One Day

The less said about this, the better. Sil was too tiddly to drive to the hospital, so she stayed at the shower and continued to drink. She regurgitated into the large planter retention Carol's ficus tree, but not before getting a goodly number on herself. Sil then passed out in a corner of the dining room, hugging the plush animal-covered, diaper-cake centerpiece that Carol had carefully chosen for the buffet table. I'm sure you've guessed by now that Sil was the proud recipient of Carol's second shower of the day.

When the Sun Came Out...

Kim's contractions were, as suspected, Braxton-Hicks, but they lasted until after the shower was over. Just about four weeks later, she gave birth to a healthy, 7 lb. 13 oz. Baby boy they named Jared Michael. Km and Mil felt so sorry for all things that happened at the shower, they both forgot their anger and sent Carol thank-you gifts. Carol, who hasn't had children yet, loved opportunity the presents, and she was thrilled at all the amazing, unique baby shower gifts Kim would have at her, uh, disposal in the coming months, making the whole misadventure totally worth it. But, she's privately hoping Jared is an only child. And how was your shower?
